Comments: I'd like to express my profound appreciation to the many giant men of the Dog Seven Association who have written me in regard to an e-mail I submitted on 6-28, on behalf of my father, former Navy Corpsman L.F. Leibold, who passed away in September 1994.
My father's bedrock philosophy in life was, in fact, based upon an indomitable espirit de corps he had learned while a member of the FMF during WWII, and in Korea. And that very same spirit that Dad always kept within the innermost recesses of his heart, has long served as a teaching tool--indeed, a metaphor--for me when dealing with the myriad difficulties life often presents.
In the summer of 1970, when I wanted to drop high school football following several agonizing three-a-day practices in 90-plus degree temperatures, Dad acidly reminded me, as he had so often, of what toil, sacrifice, and commitment really mean in the face of adversity:
"What if the Marines who waded through the lagoon at Betio had just given up instead of pushing on? Or what about the guys at Chosin? What about them! What if they had just thrown in the towel on that road to the sea, and said, 'We're gonna have to quit--this is just too tough!'" Pausing, my Dad then said, "Think about it--where in the hell would you and I be today if those people had just quit, like you want to quit right now?"
I was so seared by what Dad told me that day, that I decided never to quit anything again, no matter how difficult or costly the challenge. Deep into middle age, now, I live my life in accord with a philosophy passed to me by the greatest man I ever knew, a philosophy that the man had learned from United States Marines, from men whom he frequently and unabashedly called, "the greatest people I've ever known!"

Yours, and "Always Faithful."

Comments: I was really amazed to see a picture of my father, Sgt. Walter "Ski" Muryasz. He passed away about 10 years ago after a battle with cancer. I've seen many of his pictures from his first tour in the Corps, during WW II, but never really seen any of his pictures from Korea. I would love to hear from anyone who knew my father, or has any of pictures of him during his tour in Korea. I served in the Corps myself, my father visited me at every base I was at, except for Okinawa. I enjoyed listening to his stories. He never really spoke of the bad times, only the good friends he met along the way. If you knew him, please drop me a line.

Comments: Dad's Passing
On June 7, 2001, my father, Vernon E. Firnstahl, passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was with the D-2-7 in 50-51. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1974 after a most decorative career. He started as a Private and retired a Major. He received a Silver Star and 2 Purple Hearts in Korea and a Bronze Star with Combat "V" in Vietnam along with about 2 dozen other awards and citations. He never talked much about his career until the end. He was buried on July 2, 2001 at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. It was the most breath-taking and solemn occasion I have ever witnessed and will remember to my dying days. The Marine Corps DEFINITELY takes care of their own. As a family member commented at the funeral, "Your father picked his time to be Honored", AND he most definitely was.......

Comments: My father, L.F. Leibold, HM3, lstMarDiv., was a member of "Easy Med" from '51-'52, and was a "re-tread" from the Second World War, who had participated in Operation "Iceberg" (Okinawa).
He passed away in 1994, leaving me with scores of photographs of the Easy Med compound while in operation near Panmunjom. Though he spoke only sparingly of the grim realities of his wartime service, Dad and I occasionally lifted Sake cups "to the men of the 7th Marines," and it was in our family attic, in Independence, Missouri--while looking at Jap flags and pictures of the "Land Of The Morning Calm"-- that I first learned to sing (in Korean) "Ahrrirang."
In the minutes just before he died, his last words, spoken from a semi-comatose state, were reserved for the Marines with whom he had served in two wars. As these men had protected Dad in his youth, they had shown up again, this time in his old age, to ease his transition into death. And I'm very thankful to them for that.
