Marines of the booby trap. Booby trap believed to have been set by PF. One VC wounded. Interpreters attached to company.

At 16:50 hours “D” Company patrol reported at 06:30 hrs to 07:00 hrs. vicinity coord. BS 576941. They received ten to thirty rounds
of sniper fire from six to twelve VC. Returned fire results unknown.

At 16:50 hrs. “D” Company patrol reported at 09:00 hrs. to 09:15 hrs. vicinity coord. BS 582938. Received fire from three to four VC from
vicinity coord. BS 578940. Return fire results unknown. Patrol searched Hamlet of PHU LE (1) and found one Vietnamese woman that
was shot in the neck and killed by friendly fire or enemy fire. During search of the Hamlet discovered numerous caves approximately
six feet high by three feet wide. Did not destroy due to lack of demolitions.

At 20:10 hrs. “D” Company reported hearing noises in front and to the left of their Roadblock Position. Illumination was fired, nothing
was sighted. At 20:15 hrs. automatic fire was received on the left flank. Muzzle flashes were sighted and a heavy volume of fire was
returned. The VC then moved from the left flank to the middle line position again “D” Company Roadblock was taken under fire. Fire
vigorously returned. At 20:19 hrs. Illumination was again fired but no different sightings were observed. At 20:22 hrs. two VC'S were
observed at the center of the line, immediately fire upon, Illumination again fired, no sightings. At 20:28 hrs. the Roadblock received
fire from one Automatic Rifle and three or four carbines. The right most VC was between the road and the Railroad tracks, the left most
VC was forty meters to the left of the HWY #1. All VC were positioned approximately 150 meters in front of the roadblock and then heading
toward Delta's Position. Fire was immediately resumed with tanks again opening up with thirty and fifty caliber machine guns. At 21:13 hrs.
two grenades were fired into BT 559018, from sound baring grenades were assumed to be Rifle grenades. At first light Delta patrols searched
the area, but no sign of VC dead or wounded was found. No casualties were sustained by friendly forces during the fire fight.

approximately 150 meters and found a 60mm mortar round. The round appears to be very new, the paint has not been scratched.
The other end of the wire ended vicinity coord. BS 571965. This end was not tied to anything. Squad checked the immediate area
for other booby traps, found nothing. EOD notified to pick up the round. At 09:00 hrs. EOD departed the roadblock.

and found nothing. At 09:20 hrs. having resumed their patrol they were fired on again by two VC from vicinity coord. BS 582950. Patrol
returned fire with results unknown.

At 20:50 hrs. “D” Company reported at 20:35 hrs. observing three pale yellow lights flashing on and off vicinity coord. BS 555986.
Appeared to be approximately 700 meters to the left of OP #1 in a rice paddy. Possibly being used for signaling.

At 16:40 hrs. “D” Company patrol reported they had contacted Mr. Lam who relayed the following information. At 16:30 hrs. a VC
company of 50 men were located vicinity coord. BS 515929 and they were operating toward the SONG TRA BONG RIVER vicinity
coord. BS 582935. These are Guerrillas, not main force. Second report, eval. C/3.
23 October: Page 238.
At 17:35 hrs. received the following report from “D” Company. BLOODHOUND-2 patrol while moving South along railroad tracks at 14:30 hrs.
vicinity coord. BS 576945 received 200 rounds of fire from 10-12 VC located vicinity coord. BS 570946 from approximately 250 mm away.
Returned fire and immediately assaulted. Killed two VC. Weapons and bodies were not retrieved due to evacuation of friendly wounded.
One VC was hit by automatic fire and fell with his weapon into a rice paddy. Second VC was armed with a .45 and was almost cut in half by
automatic fire. The VC were armed with M-1 Rifles. (Patrol found M-1 clips and empty casings in the area) They were also armed with carbines
and one had a revolver. All were dressed in civilian clothes. Patrol sustained two WIA'S both were walking wounded, evacuated to BAS. At
15:15 hrs. vicinity coord. BS 576949 while moving in a column (same patrol) received 5-10 rounds of fire from 9 VC located vicinity coord.
BS 572947 approximately 500 meters away. Immediately returned fire, one VC fell and did not move, also observed one man fall and
being drug off by remaining VC. Patrol did not try to retrieve the weapon as patrol was returning with the wounded Marines.
23 October: Page 239.
Delta Co. Combat 38 man patrol led by 1stLt. Hayward. At 10:30 hrs. coord. BS 576945 We were moving down railroad tracks vicinity
coord. 576945 when we were taken under fire from six VC on rail road tracks more VC started to fire from the right and left (left in the
trees and right in the rice paddies) Returned fire immediately with rifles, grenades and machine gun fire and M-79. After approx.
fifteen minutes moved down tracks and got hit again from the right and the left. After a brief lull in fire fight sent two fire teams into
Hamlet, they each killed a VC and were taken under heavy fire from estimated 12-15 VC armed with M-1 and carbines. The FO attached
to the patrol counted 9 VC leaving the Hamlet vicinity coord. BS 572938. Killed one VC to the right of the rail road tracks. Wounded one
VC as he ran from the left side of the tracks to the right. Killed one VC in the doorway to his house, could not get to his weapon as
Marine that had killed him was pinned down. Wounded one VC. Two WIA, evacuated to BAS.

Delta Co. Combat 48 Man patrol led by 1stLt. Hayward. Left at 09:30 hrs. Returned 15:30 hrs. At 10:30 hrs. at coord. BS 577942 Going
down rail road track, hit by M-1 and M-2 Carbine fire from BS 576941 from 5-6 VC received approx. 100 rounds. Immediately returned fire.
At 10:55 hrs. at coord. BS 575937 swept through the Hamlet of PHU LE (1) Received 20 rounds of sniper fire in village, found one VC KIA
and one VC WIA (saw blood trail in rice paddy vicinity coord. BS 575952) Saw 7-8 VC and put a high volume of fire into the area, no
observed hits, at BS 575937 observed one VC who appeared to have been setting a booby trap, when fire team approached he fled.
At 12:15 hrs As patrol pulled back to the northern edge of Hamlet received 20 rounds of sniper fire. Returned fire with results unknown.
At 12:45 hrs. at coord. BS 575945 Received approx. 150 rounds of fire from BS 579943 and 576942. Returned fire one VC killed and
apprehended two VCS hiding in a cave. At 10:20 hrs. vicinity coord. BS 575945 detonated a booby trap (m-26 with a trip wire and grenade
dug into the deck. Destroyed three booby traps in the same general area. One grenade was located right across from the other and it looked
as though it was tampered with so it would explode as soon as the pin was pulled. An interpreter from 3/7 interrogated two VCS and they stated
there was a plt. of VC in BINH THANH AND BINH LOC armed with MG and small arms. Two VC wounded, One VC killed, Two VCS sent to
Booth Collection Point. Two WIA sent to BAS, all troops want to go back.

At 1600 hrs. “D” Company patrol reported at 1400 hrs. the patrol having been in a firefight killed one VC and wounded two (All Confirmed)
vicinity coord. BS 575939. Patrol apprehended two VCS that were in the immediate area. One Marine had been slightly wounded during the
firefight and evacuated to BAS. The Dead VC was turned over to local villagers who claimed his body. The two VCS were delivered to this CP
at 16:20 hrs. and forwarded to ITT at 17:30 hrs.

At 22:40 hrs. “D” Company LP observed four to five VC moving on line at vicinity coord. BT 554016. LP opened fire and observed one
VC drop. One Marine dispatched to check body and pick up weapon, however remaining VC opened fire with an AR. Marine was ordered
to return to a less exposed position, under cover of return fire. Illumination failed to show any VC. Marines at LP stated they heard low
moaning sounds from vicinity of where VC was hit. At first light area was searched thoroughly with negative results.

At 23:10 hrs. “D” Company reported receiving several rounds of fire on their right flank vicinity coord. BT 554016. Fire was believed
to have come from vicinity of 3/7 lines.

revealed two armed VC with unknown type of weapon attempting to hide in shadows of brush. Fired six to eight rounds into the area.
Results unknown. No further contact during the night. At first light area was searched thoroughly with negative results.
