brush growth thinning out northward. Terrain to the east and west consist mainly of cultivated fields, harvested rice paddies, cane fields
and hedge rows throughout the built up areas. Terrain to the north was dominated by the hill mass at BS 553806. Expect defensive positions

Charley Co (A) Departed the Battalion LZ at 15:15 Hrs. and moved out toward objective "C" in the order of 3rd Plt, Command group, FAC party,
Weapons Plt, 1st Plt, and 2nd Plt. In the complex brush covered terrain, the company made a navigational error, and moved well to the north
of the assigned objective. At 16:15 Hrs the point man sighted a VC outpost at BS 556786 and BS 556791, the 3rd Plt was ordered to pursue.
At 16:30 Hrs the 3rd Plt passed over the high ground at BS 556791 and attacked to the edge of the village at BS 554794 opposed by an estimated
2 Viet Cong Plt's with heavy weapons and well dug in. The 3rd Plt at this point could no longer advance due to intensive enemy fire and heavy
casualties. The Plt was ordered to hold its position and provide a base of fire for the 1st Plt.
(B) At 16:45 Hrs the 1st Plt commenced an attack to envelop the right flank of the ridgeline and assault the hill at BS 557796. The Plt conducted
an assault after artillery preparation carrying the position by use of bayonets, grenades, and hand to hand combat. This attack was supported
by Weapons Plt located at BS 555791 using machineguns, rockets, and 60mm Mortars.
(C) at 17:30 Hrs 2nd Plt which had been in reserve, was committed to the attack. The Plt moved around the left flank of the ridge to join the
3rd Plt and assault through the village at BS 553785. As the Plt advanced it encountered heavy automatic weapons fire from BS 554788.
Due to the Intensity of the fire and heavy casualties, the attack was stalled. At the same time, Charlie Company CP came under heavy 81
mortar fire. Heavy artillery fire and air strikes were placed continually on the hamlet area during this period.
(D) At 18:00 Hrs due to darkness falling, the 1st Plt was ordered to withdraw with casualties from its objective and assist in the withdrawal
of the 3rd Plt. Plans were made to position all elements into more tenable dispositions and to prepare for a counterattack.
(E) At 18:55 Hrs the ARVN Strike Company arrived and assisted the 2nd Plt in withdrawing with its casualties to Charlie Companies
perimeter. This was accomplished with the assistance of an air strike on the hamlet complex. (F) At 19:00 Hrs the 1st Plt reached the
3rd Plt and assisted them with casualties to the Company perimeter.
(G) The withdrawal of casualties proved to be a hazardous mission. Desperate attempts were repeatedly made to evacuate all WIA's and
KIA's resulting in numerous additional casualties. The Viet Cong made a concerted effort to cover casualties with Intensive fire. In the end
all WIA's were successfully evacuated, but seven (7) KIA's were left behind until daylight.
(H) Med Evac helicopters were finally able to land at 20:00 Hrs as the enemy fire subsided. Evacuation of KIA's and WIA's continued
until 23:00 Hrs. (I) Company "D" Arrived at 20:30 Hrs and moved into the southern portion of the perimeter. With Company "C" in
the northeast and the ARVN Company in the northwest portions of the perimeter. The center of the perimeter was then located at BS 556790.

Delta Co at 19:15 Hrs Company "D" commenced movement to join with Company "C" and the ARVN strike Company. Some difficulty
was encountered in that Company "C" was not where it was presumed or reported to be, due to a navigational error made by Company

on which Company "D" could guide during their night movement through the complex terrain. Company "D" linked up with Company "C"
and the ARVN strike Company at 20:30 Hrs. A three company perimeter was formed with a 200-300 meter radius, centered at BS 556790.
