1-28 February: Page 5. Information:
1st Battalion 7th Marines. Conducted 354 combat patrols that varied from fire team to platoon (rein). Ambush, Reconnaissance, Security, Search and Destroy, Clearing and civic action type patrols In the TAN HY area.

Delta Co. Throughout the month of February received a total of 35 probes on their position by the enemy.

Delta Co. A fire plan was devised to support the company's combat base for pending attacks. One 8" Howitzer, three 105 MM Howitzer, from battery's "India" & "Golf" 3rd Battalion 11th Marines. All laid on preplanned zones and concentrations during this time frame.

Delta Co. Marines In the company base camp observed 3 VCS moving near the Hamlet located at BS 568997. No fire was brought on the VCS due to the proximity of the hamlet and danger to the Vietnamese Nationals. 20:20 Hrs.

Delta Co. Detected movement at 20:15 Hrs. BS 563997 & at 20:30 Hrs. BS 561997. Each time M-79 rounds and Illumination were fired, with 10 rounds of M-14. Results of both actions were Neg. 20:30 Hrs.

Information Gained from Vietnamese Nationals Delta Co. Received enemy report that follows. From BIHN SON Intelligence agent: (1) There are 4 Viet Cong operating In VINH An/TUONG AN/HAI NIHN area, they sometimes live In caves near TRUNG AN or they cross the river to TRONG HOA by way of the sand bar at BS 616979. (2) From TRONG HOA an additional 4 VIET CONG operate on the east side of the river as far away north as SON TRA and use day time boat traffic to move. (3) There are 800 Viet Cong operating In the area of Grid square BS 6985 with 400 supporters. Some of these go through towns at BS 698958 and BS 665978. (4) The Viet Cong have been telling the Villagers that they will hit CHU LAI or BINH SON In the next 15 days.

Information from Vietnamese Nationals Delta Co. Informed that the people that lived In the TUYET DIEM complex stated the VC were going to mine the beaches at TAH HY from grid squares BT 6202- BT6502 and destroy the dispensary at TAN HY located at BT 625006. 2 Viet Cong suicide squad members were to place demolitions against the dispensary.

Delta Co. Outpost located at BS 580976. Observed 2 VC at the tactical wire shining a flash light at the OP. The outpost challenged and the VC. They ran Into the house at the edge of the hamlet BS 580975. At the same time the outpost received 1 round of small arms fire from the area. Illumination round fired and outpost received another round of small arms fire. Outpost did not return fire due to the danger to the Villagers. 22:40 Hrs.

Delta Co. Squad size patrol left area at 10:00 Hrs. Returned to area with Neg. Contact at 14:00 Hrs.

Delta Co. Observed 2 VC trying to cross the protective wire In area of BS 569996. Marines fired Illumination and 3 M-14 rounds. At the same time received 5 rounds of carbine fire, again fired Illumination rounds and 15 rounds of M-14. With Neg. Results. 22:45 Hrs.

Delta Co. Observed 1 VC running across In front of company Sentry position at BS 572992. The Marine sentry fired 6 M-14 rounds at the VC, a search of the area was conducted with Neg. Results. 04:45 Hrs.

Delta Co. Combat patrol left area at 13:30 Hrs. Returned with Neg. Results at 15:30 Hrs.

Delta Co. Combat base received 5 to 6 rounds of carbine fire from an unknown location and unknown number of VC. Combat base did not return fire due to the undetermined location of Incoming fire. 10:15 Hrs.

Delta Co. Recon patrol left area at 09:00 Hrs. Returned with Neg. Contact at 13:00 Hrs.

21 February: Page 7.
Delta Co. At 01:45 Hrs. Delta Co. Marines observed several VC. Outside Their protective wire at BS 628992 & BS 668989. The VC. were Immediately taken under fire by the Marines and they withdrew. Shortly thereafter, the combat base received 15-20 rounds of 60 MM Mortar fire and several rounds of small arms fire. During the Mortar attack several Viet Cong armed with rocket launchers and hand grenades Infiltrated through the Marines left flank and began tossing hand grenades at the Marine positions. The Marines fired counter battery fires suppressing the 60 MM Mortar fire. Small arms fire was directed at the Infiltrators killing 5 of them. M-14, M-60, 106 RR, 90-MM and 81-MM mortars were fired on those Viet Cong outside the perimeter. 2 Viet Cong were killed by 90-MM and 1 Viet Cong was killed by 106-RR fire. It was estimated that the Viet Cong suffered an additional 15 casualties, however not confirmed by body count. The Marines sustained 9 casualties during the attack, 6 from Grenades and 3 from Mortar fire Cpl. Marty Brennan, L/Cpl. John W. Thomas, L/Cpl. Ronnie R.. Duke. Weapons and equipment captured by the Marines Included 1 .45 Cal. pistol, 1 Chicom flare pistol with 2 rounds, 1 K-44 rifle, 1 K-50 sub machine gun with 6 magazines, 2 Russian rocket launchers with 1 round, 1 bar magazine, 10 Chicom and US hand grenades, and 1 ANV cover. Numerous semi automatic rounds for weapons were also captured by the Marines. 01:45 Hrs.

Delta Co. Security Platoon located In the village of TAN HY, BS 623005 (alerted by the attack on the Company position "see above entry") Received automatic weapons, rifle grenades, and rifle fire from an unknown number of Viet Cong located at BS 623006. The Marines returned fire with M-14 and M-60 rounds killing 3 Viet Cong during the attack. The Viet Cong broke contact and withdrew, Sgt Donald Collier,LCpl Jerry Luckett and LCpl Jessie Syas were wounded and 1 Popular Force Vietnamese operating with the Marines was Killed In the attack and 2 others wounded. Marines captured 10 Chicom and US grenades during the attack.

Delta Co. Reported the confirmed body count of dead Viet Cong at 12. And 15 wounded which were dragged off, the confirmation was made by actual sighting of the wounded Viet Cong. And by blood trails found In and around the Viet Cong's positions. It Is estimated 10 to 15 Viet Cong were killed and carried off by Remaining Viet Cong. "The strength of of the Viet Cong unit Is estimated as one company with headquarters platoon less mortar section attacking TAN HY security platoon and remained In reserve mostly unarmed and for use as body bearers for dead or wounded Viet Cong and to evacuate weapons.

Delta Co. Returning combat patrol reported at 16: 30 Hrs. Received 3 rounds of carbine fire from an unknown number of Viet Cong as the patrol was returning to the combat base. Fire came from area of BT 625001. Marines returned 3 rounds of M-14 fire with Neg. Results. When patrol returned to combat base 81's fired rounds on hill with unknown results. 16:30 Hrs.

Delta Co. 2 squad sized patrols (1). located at BT 623003 was taken under fire from Viet Cong located at BT 625003. Squad received 40 rounds of automatic weapons fire (2). this squad was taken under fire from Viet Cong located at BT 624001. Squad received 30 rounds of automatic weapons fire. Squad 1 Located at BT 623005 was reinforced by another squad from the combat base and together the 3 squads returned fire on the Viet Cong with 100 rounds of M-14 and 300 rounds of M-60, 2 3.5 rocket rounds, unit called artillery upon the Viet Cong position. The VC broke contact and withdrew. 1 VC was hit during the exchange of fire and seen to fall, 2 VC were apprehended immediately following the action, 1 Marine was wounded. 13:45 Hrs.

Delta Co. Apprehended 2 VCS at BT 625009. 1 had no ID card, the other had an ID card showing he was the age of 19 but the VCS stated he was only 16 years of age. 14:00 Hrs.

22 February: Page 94.
Delta Co. Combat patrol led by Lt. Voight. Patrol fired on as soon as they left combat base area, from area of BT 623003. Patrol leader states that the patrol flushed the VC as they attempted to set up an observation point on the Combat base. 1 VC wounded and 1 Marine slightly wounded. 15:00 Hrs.

23 February: Page 8.
Delta Co. Combat base received 2 rifle grenades fired from an unknown number of VC from BS 624987. Marines returned 100 rounds of M-14, 8 rounds of M-79, 8 rounds of 81 Mortar fire. The company was unable to determine the number of VC casualties. 1 Marine was wounded. 10:35 Hrs.

23 February: Page95 .
Delta Co. Combat base observed 3 Viet Cong In the area of BS 628987. At the same time received 3 Incoming rifle grenades. Also observed what appeared to be 60 MM mortar muzzle flashes but did not receive any Incoming mortar rounds. Combat base returned fire with 5, 81 MM mortar rounds, 15, 60 MM mortar rounds, 235 M-14 rounds. Could not determine results at the time. Search of the area revealed blood trails and a shot away cartridge belt In the area.

Delta Co. Combat/ Recon patrol left wire at 09:00 Hrs. Returned with Neg. Contact at 12: 00 Hrs.

26 February: Information "Death of a Marine"
Delta Co. At the company command post In the BINH SON District, QUANG NGAI Province, PFC. John P. Gilliam died as a result of a fragmentation wound to the upper chest sustained from a bangalore torpedo he was using to clear a hedgerow for a field of fire.
