I check in every now and then because I know that my Dad would've quietly, secretly preferred me to. He was Navy Pharmacist Mate Second-Class Lowell F. Leibold, G 3/7, 1950-52, and long before he passed in 1994, he taught me this ancient song:
"Arirang, arirang, arirayo, arirang, kogaero nomganda" ('Walking over the peak at Arirang, you left me behind. You will be tired before you reach one mile.')
"Na reul porigo, kasineun nimeun, Simedo mogaso palpyongnanda" ('Walking over the peak at Arirang, the sorrows in my heart are as many as in the sky.')
"Don't ever forget those Jarheads who had to find their way on foot to the coast, from Chosin," he first told me nearly fifty years ago. Middle-aged now, I've never forgotten what the man told me.
I hope Crotts and his old pals' live forever. After all, they've earned the right.
