Comments: My Dad, Donald "Donn" G. Dughi, had your information in a notebook, I have just looked through it for the first time, my father did not talk about the war very often, and the parts he did talk about were of the men who he served with and the little things they found to laugh or smile about in a time when I am sure there was very little of that around. My Father who was my best friend passed away on April 6, 2005. I am still trying to come to terms with losing him and have felt the best when I am at his house with his belongings. Please let me know if his dues are paid up and if they are not I will pay them yearly for him in his memory. My dad was my hero and had a kind and gentle heart, and if he could help someone he met in life he did so in a quiet and unassuming way. May I be even half as good and kind as he was. Laurie Dughi

Comments: Do any of you Nov-Dec 1950 7th Marines know of my father...1st Lt. Lawrence Schmitt. He was with Capt. Barber F 2/7 on "Fox Hill"? I was USMC 1968-1971 L/cpl Vietnam 1969-1970.Ran in"Rough Rider" Convoys out to Baldy,Ross, and Ryder. Beans and Bullets to...none other...the incredible 7th Marines. You may be graying...but will never be forgotten as long as there is one Marine left to tell the story. At 55, I have to watch my blood pressure when I start to think about it.I am the "wonderful son" in his letter in the book "Breakout" I was 18 months old at the time. Thank you. Semper Fi

Comments: Just received via snail-mail a letter from Philadelphia's Chuck Lyman, formerly of How 3/1, and an enclosed copy of the Washington Post's January 8 obituary for 3/5's Colonel Bob Taplett. It's comforting to know that we've quite a few of our Korean War veterans still out there. Sorry to read about the death of Laurie Dughi's father, however. My own dad's death in '94 has left me longing for him to this day. What I'd give to enjoy yet one more ice-cold beer with him, and listen to a tale of life in the First Marine Division in Korea. Life's greatest pleasures are always the smallest ones, it seems. Thanks for the memories.

Comments: Have been out-of-town for some time, and just read George Crotts's e-mail regarding the death of Colonel Lockwood. Very sorry to hear the sad news. Gone is yet another man who witnessed first-hand the evil face of North Korea, a regime that continues to plague the world with it's inexplicable and unfounded bitterness. A politically disenfranchised woman in our local newspaper recently wrote that we (the U.S.) 'goaded' the North Koreans into war fifty-five years ago. I would've written this Red cheerleader a response, but learned years ago that stupidity of that caliber deserves no response outside the muzzle of an M-l. Here's to men like Lockwood and Taplett, indeed all the men who sacrificed dearly to keep that sort of tyranny in check.

Comments: "I am heartened that the Marine Brigade will move against the Naktong Salient tomorrow. They are faced with impossible odds...but these Marines have the swagger, confidence, and hardness that must have been in Stonewall Jackson's Army of the Shenandoah. I cling to the hope of victory."
--Report of the British Liaison Officer to the U.S. Eighth Army, August 15, 1950
"It is my conviction that the successful assault on Inchon could have been accomplished only by United States Marines."
--Read Admiral James Doyle, Commander, Amphibious Group One, Inchon
"The Marines suffered 4,400 casualties of their own in the Chosin campaign, including 703 killed, plus thousands and thousands of frostbite cases. But, God, what a sight the survivors made striding into Hungnam on December 12! Said one admiring onlooker: 'Look at those bastards. Look at those magnificent bastards!' The Marines did not leave Hungnam without grateful company. Evacuated with them were 100,000 Korean refugees, escaping the totalitarian [North Korean] regime, one of history's greatest and least-recorded humanitarian transfers....The Marines had endured their greatest battle challenge with elan and grit and matchless discipline....Army historian Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall studied the disastrous UN campaigns in North Korea exhaustively and critically. He concluded: "No other operation in the American book of war quite compares with this show by the lst Marine Division in the perfection of tactical concepts precisely executed, in accuracy of estimation of the situation, in leadership at all levels, and in promptness of utilization of all supporting forces."
--Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC Ret., excerpted from his "The Battle History of the U.S. Marines"

World War II veteran and Lake Tahoe, California resident Ray Jacobs, an octogenarian, gave his all for his country sixty-one years ago as a member of the original party of U.S. Marines tapped to raise the first American flag over Iwo Jima's malevolent Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. Visit Sgt. Grit's webpage at www.grunt.com/forum, and take a look at the largely unknown story of the first Iwo flagraising and the tale of a true American hero. Let's publicize fellow-Marine Ray Jacobs's lofty place in history before he's no longer here to witness the accolade.
