survivors of battles for Hill 749 in Korea, Sept 1951cbeaty@sbcglobal.net
On Sept 12 1951 the Second Btn of 7th was assigned to take a couple of hills above the Punchbowl and about 1700 that day Easy Company reported they had taken 749- a mistake as they were on a spur ridge to South of summit of 749. We of Easy Company First were assigned to relieve the the same company of 7th, but it seems could not on night of 12-13th locate you- then we hung out at base of Hill 749, I believe still not knowing where you were, then we were put in to assault 749 about 1500, and no support fire nor planes- I believe because it was not certain where you were! How? when did you get out or off that ridge you were on??- we found 749 heavily occupied by the North Koreans, and Easy First could not get all the way to summit (we werw hurting for ,and lacking ammo too! So Dog Company then passed through us and finally got to the summit- I got taken out of the action while acting as Plt Sgt by a couple burp gun slugs through my head- HMR 161 saved my life getting me over to 121st Evac Hospital by evening time of 13th so the neurosurgeon could work on me- the more I study and rethink the whole operation, I often wonder when and how you guys got out of there_ I have friends of F/2/1 who relived your B company and they were scheduled to relieve you Fox company but like our people don't think they could ;locate them..
