Dear Leigh - I was in the tent with Jim when he was accidently shot in the stomach by a Marine cleaning his M-16. I was the other Corpsman in Delta Company's 3rd platoon at the time. I didn't get a chance to know him very well because he had just returned from the hospital in Da Nang where he was being treated for malaria. He had only been back with us for a few days. When I arrived in June, Jim was already in the hospital. The other Marines in the platoon always spoke very highly of Jim. He was with them during Operation Worth and the early part of Mameluke Thrust. When we medevaced him I did not think he was going to die and his death surprised and saddened all of us.
