| I was with 1st platoon, Lt. Bill Hegarty's platoon on Bravo Company, 1/7. I wrote home about this incident and just the other day found all the letters I had written to my family. I was the platoon radio man on this date. I remember that we had found a large cache of food and were proceeding to the top of "Charlie Ridge". I heard radio traffic that someone had tripped a booby trap and was KIA and that another soldier was wounded. A Medi-vac chopper was called in. As the chopper was hovering over the side of the mountain attempting to recover the wounded via a stretcher enemy soldiers from the top of the mountain began firing weapons at the chopper. I remember seeing the chopper leave the scene. A few minutes later my lieutenant yells we have to get down out of this mountain. He did not say anything further at this time. We began to double time down the mountain and it wasn't until we reached the rice patties that I seen the downed chopper. I remember that there was only one survivor. I also remember that they would not come for the KIA's until the next day and we stayed with the KIA's until then. I am sorry for your loss as for all my brothers in Nam.
