Thankyoutemperflare@yahoo.com
My father was enlisted in the Army for 24 years and served in Vietnam in '70, '71. I take great pride in my fathers devotion to duty. He was not drafted, nor was he coerced in any way to join the Army. He simply decided to go. On his 18th birthday he boarded a plane to Vietnam. My father was career Infantry and a member of a reconassaince unit of which unitI am not sure. He does not talk much about his time in Vietnam even though at times I press him for information. Knowing of my father's devotion to his country and what he had been through I grew up wanting to be exactly like him. I always knew I was going to enlist, however I did not know it would be the most elite members of the Armed Forces, the U.S. Marines.
I enlisted in the Corps 6 months before graduation from high school in 1994. I served in Security Forces as an Infantryman (0311) and then went to my first fleet unit, that being 1st Battalion 7th Marines, Alpha Co., 2nd Platoon. I did not know what to expect. I do know that I couldn't have been selected for a better duty assignment. Although I never saw combat, I do at times wish that I had so that I may carry the pride and experience that you all have with you. Though my father tells me that I should be happy I never saw combat, I feel that I truly missed something in the midst of my time with the Corps.
I will go on with my pride of serving with the best unit in the entire Marine Corps and hopefully one day my son will experience the Corps.
I thankyou for the precedence that you all set for the rest of us to admire and the sacrifices made to instill a great sense of pride.
