On the same day, both Marco and Kline got killed in the middle of a small village where our Platoon was ambushed by a sapper squad of NVA. They died trying to save each other from the bullets of the sappers. I was pinned down adjacent to the village in a rice paddy along with the Plt. Sgt. who I was carrying the radio for. Ultimately, 3rd Plt. came to our aid, and after the better part of an hour we took out each one of the bunkers that the sappers were located in. That was the only day I cried in Vietnam. I cried for Marco and Kline who both were supposed to return home in about 10 days.
