Doc Baker:
I was with Fox 2/7 in 1968 and was wounded on the 21st of August. We were medvac to Da Nang. I remember there were three of us. I don't know the names of the others. Someone tripped a booby trap and KBooom. I was sent to Da Nang and then to Guam and then home. I went back on TDY for 6 months and then retired with 30% disability. This operation was called Mamluke Thrust. There was another Doc with us. I thought maybe it was you. I just found out the Doc who signed my tag was G.Carey. I was with first Plt Fox 2/7 First Squad. I remember a fire fight we got in on about the 17th that killed Rayford Nelson. He was shot in the head. The fire fight lasted all day. I think he was the only one killed in our Plt that day. We were getting into position to return fire and I looked down and he was laying right at my feet. The Doc was doing all he could. I will never forget that image. Then we moved on up the hill and started to return fire. We were shooting over an old train track into a village and a tree line. I shot 750 rounds into the tree line and village. Then we moved back and that night we set up a perimeter. That night my Squad had to go out on an LP and I remember all of us were so tired. The next day we moved out and I think Gulf got hit that day. Then we made another move and were sweeping when we got into a booby trap. I don't know if this is the time frame you were looking for.I know almost a month later on the 19th of Sept. Fox 2/7 lost a lot of Marines and a Lt. Hubert Humphries our CO. was awarded the Silver Star for this battle. Maybe that is the one you are remembering. Hope I have been of some help. Semper Fi Bro.
