Once you run out of clucth fluid the clucth master cylinder will suck in air. Once air is suck in to it filling up the reservoir will not purge the air back out. With air in the system the air will compress when you push on the clucth pedal making the clucth feel loose and will not let the clucth disengage. If the clucth cannot disengage then your transmission will not shift since the input and output gears cannot be synchronized. The synchromesh system won't let the gears try to mesh and even if it does the gears will clash (make a horrible grinding sound)
