Comments: Just wanted to tell you what a great site you have here. Also, to thank all the marines who helped me in my research of my cousin, PVT Don Obey, Lima Co. 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. "Skip" was KIA on September 14th 1968 in the "Dodge City" sector of Quang Nam Province. I found much of the information from this site, and from communicating with other members of Lima Company that I found here. Again, thank you all very much for your help and your service to our great country.

Comments: I was with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade Aug. 68 to 69. In August of 69 the 7th Marines had to come in and help the 196th in Death Valley because they ran into a force of 3000-5000 NVA. I lost alot of friends during that battle. I would like to here from any Marines that were in that battle.

It is up to you to bring yourself in. Tell a buddy!! This is a great site and has gone a long way to enhance our recruiting efforts. Great to see all of you in Charleston. Best showing of Officers ever. (Gives us enlisted types someone to talk about) just kidding. Our leaders were an important part of our tours and it is really great to see them all again. They surly know who the important ones are in the Battalion. Look for our online newsletter coming soon. Jim

At that time he would have been 25 years old. Would like to hear from anyone who might have known him. He liked to party. He did retire from the Marines as a 1stSgt in 1981. Semper Fi.

His name was William Roland Pruitt, Lcpl whose body was not recovered after his unit had to pull back under heavy enemy fire. When his unit returned to the scene a short while later he was no where to be found. His family was told by the Marine Corps that he had been buried in the immediate area but no one knew where he was buried. If anyone is interested in what I am tring to do, please contact me. Comments: My father George Hansbrough served in 1/7 from 1965-1966 in SVN. He was an 81mm mortar crewman, and an excellent Marine. He has been my idol since I was very young, and he instilled in me his Marine principles which undeniably made me a better man. Following his example I served as a Ranger medic until receiving wounds in Kuwait City permanently disabling me. Though not a Marine myself, I credit you fine men with setting the example for my generation. I salute you.

Comments: I was assigned to BLT 3/7 from 1st FSSR (Ammo Company) Okinawa. The first landing was at Qui Nhon? in support of one of the army airborne forces that made contact/ran into trouble. Second was at Chu Lai(Starlight?) where we were off loaded. I then went back to 1st FSSR. The main thing I really remember is that Marines went. They were ready and willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. God Bless these men. I wish that I were a GRUNT.

Comments: Dear Heroes, To many, Memorial Day has become another shopping or vacation or drinking holiday. Many hear the uttering of war on TV, on the radio etc. and watch pictures of flags on graves, and old war heroes in uncomfortable fitting uniforms. But, unfortunately, that's all many will see!!!!!! They will not see the fear young men experienced in the war zone. They will not see the fear of their parents and siblings left behind. They will not see the pain of the men that trained them to go there. They will not see the pain of the leaders that lost them. They will not feel the bullets that ripped through the soldier, or the knives that scared them deep. They will not see they eyes of a child being used to lure the soldier and to kill them both. They will not feel the sorrow of the soldier watching his buddies die in his arms or get blown to pieces. They will not feel the guilt of the soldier that survived, wishing he could have done more, offered one more limb, one more drop of his blood for his buddies that died. They will not feel, how unwelcome the returning soldier was returning stateside. They will not see and feel the nightmares day after day, week after week; year after year many returning heroes endured and still are enduring. They will never see, how their hearts are crying out in pain and searching for the answer. I could list many more.... but it's time for me to say: THANK YOU! I WELCOME YOU HOME! THANK YOU! NO MATTER IF YOU RETURNED ALIVE OR DEAD! THANK YOU! TO THE MIA'S, MAY THEY FIND THEIR PEACE AND RETURN HOME. THANK YOU FOR THE TEARS YOU HAD TO SHED IN PRIVATE! THANK YOU FOR THE PAIN YOU SUFFERED! THANK YOU FOR YOUR LIMBS YOU LOST! THANK YOU FOR BEING MY HEROES!!!! Comments: Pictures of the CROT tower on Hill 41 by Ochoa bring back many memories of long nights looking out over the "villes". From July to November 1967 I was on Hill 41 as an F.O. with the Naval Gunfire Section, Hq. Brty., 3rd Bn., 11th Marines and assigned to "O.P. Lou" as we were called. We fired counter-rocket artillewry and T.O.T. missions on and around the hills, into the valleys, onto mountain slopes and anywhere else they tried to infiltrate their rockets. I was friends with SSgt Houng, the Vietnamese Marine liaison and Phan Nam the Kit Carson Scout assigned to D/1/7. I believe a 1stLt. Gagnon (Gannon?) was one of the offiers on the hill as well. Two tanks, two tracs, 81 mortars, a couple of 106's and a damn Army searchlight team are some of the other groups I remember. Does anyone remember them and Sgt. Tickler with the searchlight team? After Vietnam, I stayed in, but was medically retired as a "Gunny" in 1977. Thanks -- I needed this!

Comments: I served with "D" Co., 7th Engineers and was assigned to Hill 37 w/ the 7th Marines, HQ Bn. I was on that hill for nearly my full tour and a half and met some great individuals. This was the first time since 1967 that I had seen the "hill" from the air and it sure brought back a ton of memories - not all of them good. Sites like these have a cathardic and even 'medicinal' effect for many of us 'Nam vets. Thank you for your efforts. Semper Fi, bros... Stoney

Comments: May have been here before. I still need your help... I was asking for anyone that may have known my brother CPL. Verrell Daniel Stiles. He was killed on March 28, 1967 along with 12 other Marines in Da Nang in a class room instruction, when a M-16 anti-personnel mine prematurely exploded. He was in 1st Marine Div. A Co., 7th Engrs. Anyone out there know him or about this explosion? PLEASE help me... I have been trying for 9 long years to get a Purple Heart for my brother, but have been denied. I have been told that he was not in enemy territory, that this was an accident, that I should call it fate, that he was not killed in action????? Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me? I have been to the Marine Corps, to President Clinton, all my Senators, and Congressmen...TO NO AVAIL!! The hours spent and the stress of this research has been tremendous for the past 9 years.

I was attached to the 7th Marines as an artillery officer for my entire tour in country, from May 1966 through June 1967. I was the FO of E-2/7 from April through early August 1966, operating mainly in the Chu Lai TAOR, but later at the Rockpile and Dong Ha near the DMZ as well. In August 1966 I was transferred to H&S 2/7 and was Battalion Fire Support Officer ("24") from then until February 1967. I served with 2/7 in the heavy stuff on Operation Prairie near the DMZ in August and September 1966. In February 1967 I became CO of HQ Battery 3/11 at the 7th Marines HQ, and relocated with the 7th to Hill 55 in April of that year. A black and white photo of my "24" team (Ssgt. Clune, Cpl. Lovejoy, Cpl. Jamison, Lcpl Bollinger, Pfc Thomas and myself), taken at the Rockpile in September 1966, has been sitting on my desk for the last 33 years. I haven't forgotten any of them; nor have I forgotten the thousands of other fine Marines with whom I served in Vietnam. I look forward to hearing from any Marines who served with me. The welcome mat is out. Semper Fi and God Bless! Karl Ege, Capt. USMC (1965-1969)

Comments: Welcome home, Marines. I had the pleasure to serve as the 14 for 2/7 in mid '70. It really was a pleasure for an aviator like me (CH-53 driver) to see how the grunts worked. I really learned to appreciate the job the grunts had to do. I just found the 2/7 web site, and updated my info there. Wouldn't trade my time with the grunts for anything. Wonderful experience. Retired in '82. Now I have to work for a living. Which I had better get back to. Never Forget! Semper Fi, Skip Burns Capt USMC Ret

Comments: What a great site! I have really enjoyed looking at the 7th Marines website. I served with Echo Co, 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Mar Div from Dec. 1967-October 1968. My 1st Platoon was attached to BLT 2/7 from May or June 1968 until I was medivac in October. We were on the USS Vally Forge on our way to the Phillipeans for about two weeks of training then we came back to Vietnam on the USS Tripoli. I notice that our unit was not listed on the Attached units to the 7th Marines.

It enabled me to find the village name that my CAP unit was at. Phone Le (2) and the Cau Do one lane bridge coming from Danang. In my village there was a "Y". If you took the right fork you ended up at Hill 55. If anyone has any pictures of this area I would appreciate e-mailing them to me at DIDELOTDE@CS.COM. Also I am searching for anyone who was a member of San Diego Boot Camp Platoon 2213. Thanks again for the map section. The webmaster for the CAP Web page did not believe the name I gave him for the name of my village. Now I can send him the map and show him.

Thank you so much. Seeing picture of Hills 52, 25, 65 liberty bridge, An Hoa then and now is so unreal and brought back so many memories. One in particular was the picture of the road at the base of Hill 52 looking east. In my book I write about walking down that road on my first day in the bush. It sure dosn't look as scary as it did then. He died when I was 6 months old (not in Vietnam, but in a train/car accident after he returned home) I do not know much about him. I am desparte to find ANYONE who knew him, ideaaly spent several days, weeks, with him. Please help me, how do I go about doing this? I don't even know where to start. I truely respect and forever grateful to all the men who served there. The story is incredibly interesting, and want to know as much as I can, in regards to what my father went through and experienced. I know he was in combat, possibly in Kai Shan (spelling???). He was injured by a sniper, and stayed at the Third Battalion Medical Center, where he was awarded a purple heart, by Lt. General Kulak. This si all I know. Please help me, any advice you can give will be helpful. Thanks, Georgia Thomas Watson, daughter of William Allen Thomas. born 12/14/46, service number2225303.

Comments: Victor, Victor, Victor -- the new format looks great! I have a request for ALL those who served in Vietnam over a Christmas season. If you can find the time, I would like you to do several things for me. I'm in the process (about 1/2 way) of writing a book and request your participation in it (should your story warrant) -- if you want. There is no compensation (moneywise) for the participation in the book however -- sorry. Your name, your bio and your picture (then or now -- your choice -- perfer then) would be included on the page(s) of your story. If you want, send me your (as detailed as you want) rememberances of Christmas (s') in Vietnam (any and all years). I'll need your bio also. I'm doing simple line drawings for some of the pages where I don't receive pictures. If there is anyone how has a "Santa" type Vietnam picture or what have you, it will be needed and proper credit will be given in the begining of the book. So far I have some really interesting and macab stories plus some really funny ones. Yea, you'll get a free book so stop your whinning - only kidding (about the whinning). The stories and photos can be either E-mailed to me at dixiediner@earthlink.net or snailmailed to me at; PO Box 177 Whippany, New Jersey 07981-0177. All photos will be returned after book is published. There will be the need of a release form signed for any stories and/or pictures utilized. Some of the profits will go to The High Ground (Neillsville, Wisconsin), a non-profit veterans memorial park I founded in 1983. In fact absolutely "the most beautiful Memorial Park in the United States dedicated to 20th Century Veterans." That's about it for now, I'll keep this site informed as to the progress I am making. I wish all of you Marines a very successful 2000. For those that served in H&S 2/7 (1965) and are on the roster, there is a newsletter waiting for you. All I'll need is your physical address. Semper Fi, Tom Miller (H&S Co 2/7 (1964 - 1965), my mos was 2571 (that's a "Special Radio Operator" who never had a "special radio" [can't consider those #@%*&!$ PRCs "special" because they weighed so damn much; never working properly; acted as an antenna "arrow" for "Charlie" to sight in on and carrying them wasn't fun] ) in the Tactical Air Control Party (can't say Tactical either, as all we did was napalm the heck out of them and throw the poor grunts on helicopters), retired PFC with 28 months in grade (did it but, never got caught), happy and still proud (to have been 28 months as a PFC; to have been in Vietnam and to be a Marine -- irritated, but still proud). Comments: Outstanding site Marines! Truly a great place to stop on the web. I was with 2/26 at Khe Sanh in '68 and I am embarking on a return trip with my daughter in March. My inquiries regarding a map of the Khe Sanh area have thus far resulted in a lot of confusing information until I hit this site. Now I not only know EXACTLY what map I need, but I also have the order form too. Hats off to the webmaster for a fine job and Semper Fi! to ALL. I will surely be back.

Comments: I was NCOIC of the "NVA/USMC Mutual Friendship Society". I spent most of my time organizing special events designed to encourage "cross cultural interaction" with our little northern friends. Two of my most memorable accomplishments were the "Tet Chili Cookoff", which the 141st NVA would have won if they'd have scraped the hair off the dog!! and the "4th of July Beer Bash". The little buggers got so drunk on Pabst Blue Ribbon we had to let em sleep it off in the Officers Quarters. Somewhere I have pics of one of their Platoon Commanders trying to sex with the Skippers "Rubber Lady", will forward them when I find em. In the meantime keep up the good work Vic, you're doing a fine job!! Semper Fi

Comments: Vic, loved your site and am proud to have served with men like yourself in the Greatest Fighting Force known to mankind - Our Beloved U.S.M.C. Your site touched the very core of my being and brought forth emotions that I wish I never had to experience again;however, I know at any time these emotions may and will stir within me over and over again. I like others of my brothers can never shake free of those horid days of combat when lives on both sides were given in sacrifice for what each belived to be the "just cause." I am pourd to have banded with my brothers in the fight for freedom despite the cost and pray God's mercy for us all. Comments: I was a Marine 1st.Lt., and ran "roughrider" convoys from Da Nang north to Dong Ha and south to Chu Lai. Mostly, however, I ran about 75-100 convoys to 7th Marines on Hill 55, L.Z. Ross, and L.Z. Baldy. Spent a lot of nights in both Baldy and Ross. The road between Baldy and Ross was a bitch and full of mines. I took the relief convoy with tanks into Ross after they were partially overrun in Jan. 1970. Ross had 14 KIA and about 60+ WIA. There were 43 NVA KIA and a lot of blood trails. One NVA officer was killed going through papers in a field desk in the S-3 hootch. My men and I felt good about getting through because Ross had it pretty rough that night. We also felt good about helping a little because Ross was out of 50 cal ammo and mortars when we came through the gate. Unfortunately, we lost two trucks and 6 KIA to command detonated mines on the way in. One of my best friends was an 1st/Lt. F.O. with 2/7. You guys were great. Semper Fi!
