Comments: My brother was CPL Verrell D. Stiles. 1st Marine Div., 7th Engrs, A Co. Killed March 28, 1967 during a classroom instruction. Have been trying to obtain a Purple Heart in his HONOR for 7 years. I have not given up.. The Marine Corps says that he is not entitled due to his death being an "Accident"? I feel that he most certainly deserves the Purple Heart. Along with the 12 other Marines killed on that day. If you wish to respond, please e-mail me at a friends address. psurrette@CITCOM.NET would appreciate any info, or perhaps someone will have known my brother. Vanessa Stiles Payne

Comments: It's not over!! The sounds, the smells, the sights and the ever present disability! It's there when I wake, It's there when I try and hold my grandchildren, it's there because people stare and wonder and won't let you forget. It's not over!! It's just taken another form in time and place. Soon, maybe, as all things do, this too will come to an end! I have my own "Wall", and it bears many things and places upon it. It has stood before me all these years, and just like me, it grows older. Maybe time will wear away the things upon it!! Charlie Company 1/7 1965-66 Chu Lai

I caught malaria in November 1969 and spent 45 days on The Repose hospital ship when my tour ended. Got home re-enrolled in college. Graduated from Clemson University in 1973. Comments: My name is Donald Eshelman, I served with the "I" Corps 3rd Btn, 11th Marines in support of the 7th. I was a radio operator with a forward observation team, but for the life of me I can't remember which unit I served with. Spent a lot of time with the grunts though. I toured from August 63 to Oct 66. We floated to Okinawa from Pendleton in May 65 and then after a month to acclimate we boarded the Iwo Jima and floated up and down the coast of Viet Nam. Landed in Chu Lai some time around September 65 at the end of the air field (back when it was nothing but a bunch of steel planks for runways). Came home in June 66 and instead of being discharged (3yr enlistment) I was extended and sent ot Lejune to train artillary radio operators. I was released from active duty late in October 1966 and came home to start civilian life. Went through MCRD in SD and we out posted to Pendleton for ITR the day JFK was shot. I made E-4 in just over 2 years and would have made E-5 were it not for my shorter tour of duty (the guys that made E-5 were still there after I left and it made sense, why promote someone who is scheduled to leave). No regret there. I am interested in visiting with anyone, 7th, 11th or otherwise to just compare notes. I'm especially interested in comparing notes with current Marines. From what I have seen these guys are living a comparativly luxurious lifestyle compared to what we had (they even have airconditioned barracks at MCRD-SD) Feel free to leave me a note, no matter how long, at djecpa@aol.com. I'll be more than glad to receive it and will return any e-mails I receive.

I also had the great honor and priviledge to transport many of you to, and especially from, the Gulf during Desert Shield and Deseert Storm when I was flying 747's for Pan Am. I have a close friend whose son has just joined the USMC. He just now graduated from school, and has been taken under the wing of his gunny recruit and is really getting in shape for his boot camp later this Fall. Ist Tank Battalion. My company headquarters was on Hill 55, I spent to months on Hill 10 and the rest of my time on Hill 37.Being a Tanker we did a lot of traveling places like An Hoa, Liberty Bridge, Hill 65, Hill 52, Di Loc, Dodge City, Arizona Territory. Our main mission was support for the grunt's in that Rocket Belt area around Da Nang but we did many road sweeps, daytime patrols and some operations like Mamaluke Thrust, Sussic's Bay and few that I don't remember where the hell we were...All I can say is thanks and SEMPER FI...

Comments: You may have "heard" from buddy, Tom Cassis. We were both machine gunners with D/2/7 in NKorea, 11/50-12/50. We've had an association since 87 and a reunion every year since. Just added members 535-537 this morning. Still looking for almost 1400 still "out there". Anyway, Tom told me you were a Nam vet. Glad you made it brother. And, outstanding Website. We're still pondering whether to get that serious or not. Take care and a BIG SEMPER FI, George
